The Carlton is a historic and stately building originally constructed in 1927, located near Union Square and the Theatre District, an area of the city that is distinctly 'San Franciscan' in its architecture and environment. The reopening also includes the introduction of a spacious hotel café.
The ambiance of the Hotel Carlton can be best described as international vintage, featuring eclectic and exotic touches from around the world that celebrate the joy of travel. Each guestroom offers a soft palette of soothing tones such as light breezy blue and cashmere cream, punctuated by touches of glowing colors like saffron, Oriental red and a cheerful persimmon. The Hotel isnt flanked by adjoining buildings, so many of the rooms look out upon an expansive and unobstructed view.
| Why We Love It | The Hotel Carlton’s mantra is "peace through travel" hoping that experiencing different cultures will open people's minds and ultimately make it a better world for us all. This is reflected in the eclectic international style of design which we found inviting and refreshing. The hotel is certified "green" by the city of San Francisco, so they don't only do their bit for international relations, but for the environment as well. Also unique for this area is the fact that there are no adjoining buildings surrounding the hotel which means expansive, uninterrupted views from most rooms. The hotel offers a nightly complimentary wine reception and you must sample the Arabic-fusion cuisine at their in-house restaurant Saha. This is where you stay when it matters to you where you stay!

Ideal position to explore San Francisco, Room ok but Hotel is tired and need of a facelift. Staff excellent.no restaurant in hotel, but plenty nearby.

Hotel was clean but it needs to be updated but met our expectations of a 3 star hotel. The staff were very friendly and we both enjoyed the free wine tasting every evening from 5.30-6.00. The location was not great as it was a few blocks away from a poor district. It was in a noisy location not far from a fire station. We were also next to the lift which was noisy at night. Next time we would stay nearer to Union Square as we needed to get taxi's most of the time.

The hotel although fairly small was fantastic and gave you the impression of a 30's style hotel but with a modern twist. The staff were friendly, helpful and polite and the location was close to the Union Square shops and restaurants and in easy reach of the famous cable cars.

Great hotel and great staff who very very, very helpful. Good location in middle of everything, maybe prefer a location in Fishermans Wharf next time.

Hotel was quaint. In an old building and old type rooms. The room was very clean, bed good. Don't think there was air conditioning. Ear plugs needed for very busy street. Staff very nice. 15 min walk to Union Square so not in the centre. Advised on a map not to go to an area quite near the hotel so it's def not in the better part of town. Discarded mattresses on the street nearby. Other guests were pleasant. If you're looking for modern and luxury this isn't the place. We did enjoy our stay but would have preferred a better standard, closer to attractions. Wouldn't go back.

The walls seem very thin as we were kept up half the night by a child crying one side and teenagers partying the other side. The hotel was very good a staff excellent.

The room at this hotel was very small and basic. A TV was provided but no coffee making equipment. Located very close to Union Square and various public transport facilities. Staff at this hotel were excellent and extremely friendly. Free wine was provided every evening at 1730 to 1800 and this was accompanied by local singers, staff playing keyboards etc (great fun). The biggest gripe about the location of this hotel was the fact that there were sirens all though the night!!! I believe a local accident and emergency hospital was close to the hotel. Parking charged at 30 USD (Valet) per day. No Wi-Fi.

Staff were fantastic - really helpful, polite and nothing too much trouble. Location was good, just enough of a stroll to get into Union Square. Room was a good size, not huge but always plentiful towels etc.

Good: Friendly/helpful/informative staff. Complimentary bottle of wine and free wine reception each evening. Good size room safe. Walk-in wardrobe. Large comfy bed. Bathroom OK. Free wireless. Good choice of breakfast, reasonably priced. Good atmosphere. Would re-visit. 3 and a half star hotel. Bad: Can't think of anything. Oh, no fridge.

Bathroom was rather small, but otherwise very clean and comfortable room. Where the hotel did excel itself was in the friendliness and helpfulness of the desk staff- nothing was too much trouble for them and they were a big help in arranging our car hire rental.
