Philadelphia - if not the oldest then certainly the most historically
significant city in the US, this is a must-visit for history buffs,
families, and city breakers. You can easily spend a whole day, if not two,
in Independence National Historical Park. Home of the Liberty Bell and
Independence Hall, this is where both the Declaration of Independence and
the US Constitution were drafted and signed. First, stop by the
Visitors Centre to obtain your free timed ticket for admittance to the Hall
and get your bearings. There is so much to see in this most historic square
mile, you won't want to miss anything!
Missing Europe? We didn't think so, but Philadelphia has a fabulous Rodin
museum with the biggest collection outside France. Feeling energetic?
Time to make like Rocky and head for the Philadelphia Museum of Art - don't
just run the stairs - go inside - this is one of the best museums in the US.
Visit the first ever zoo in the United States - by foot, or by guided bike tour.
And when you're ready for something to eat you have to sample the classic
Philadelphia Cheesesteak. And where better to try one than Reading Terminal
Market. This is quintessential Philly with its buzzing atmosphere, delicious
smells, fresh produce stalls and hand-made jewellery stands.
It's the perfect place for lunch and a spot of shopping. Speaking of shopping -
there is no sales tax on clothing or shoes, so make sure you budget in some
serious shopping time. Philadelphia is full of outlet stores and malls, ask us
to recommend a full day's itinerary!
"I love Philadelphia. I was shocked at what a great city this is. For me, it is
the cat's pajamas."
George Dzundza, Actor
