At check in the gentleman was concerned that my husband who was very tall would not be comfortable for 4 nights in the bedroom we had booked. He went away for a few minutes and had a look at his plans and gave us a massive corner suite on the 17th floor with views over Park Avenue and 49th Street and the Empire State Building!! We could not believe it. It had a big entrance lobby with chairs and a butlers area behind doors, a massive living room with two huge sofas, desks, tables and antiques, giant flat screen TV's. We had a massive bedroom with a super king bed, Bose radio, CD player, enormous dressing room and off there grand doors leading to a marble master piece of a bathroom with separate shower, loo and bath and two sink areas. We were amazed as it was bigger than the downstairs of our house. We had 5 windows on Park Avenue. It was a real gift and it made it so special for us. It was on the smoking floor but it smelt lovely in our suite. We so enjoyed it. The hotel itself lives off the guided age of the 1930's and 1940's and so it should it was a master piece. The Grand Ballroom was beautiful as was the lobby and public areas. There is a nice exhibition about its history. I can imagine that some would not like it as it is "old" but it is very well furnished in expensive traditional fittings. The staff were great and the place was so clean. I loved that era and we were about to go home on the QM2 so it was all part of the game. We did not eat in the hotel as we suspect it would have been very expensive and did feel a little under dressed at times so if I went again I would take a few smart evening things to wear and try some of their restaurants.

Our room was extremely noisy - the air con was so loud we did not sleep our first night. Rang them at 5 a.m. to say we were unable to sleep. They were very compassionate and promised to move us the next day - we were upgraded with an apology. Excellent service.

Finally a room that was of an appropriate family size. Actually had floor to spare after moving in and unpacking suitcases etc etc. Slightly faded opulence but still comfortable. Shame we had to go to foyer to get free wireless (charged for in room). Noisy air con was only downside to room. Very good shower in bathroom. Good central location close to Grand Central station. Could do with a guide to local eateries in the locale as bars and restaurants in hotel were very expensive.
